MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests sailing from La Romana, Dominican Republic will soon enjoy a significantly enhanced day at Catalina Island. A new joint venture aims to upgrade facilities for a resort-style beach experience. This Natural Monument is famous for its protected nature reserve, white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and coral reefs.
Joint Venture To Reimagine Catalina Island
The upgrades are facilitated through a 50/50 joint venture between CTL Maritime (part of the MSC Group) and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, a leading luxury resort in the Dominican Republic. Under this agreement, both partners will re-develop the island’s beach destination and welcome:
- Guests from MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys
- Visitors from other cruise lines
- Private guests from Casa de Campo Resort & Villas
The project focuses on enhancing comfort while respecting environmental protections and maintaining open access for all.
New Beachfront Dining & Bar Concepts
A new open-air beach pavilion buffet will be the dining hub, serving a mix of international and local Dominican dishes with shaded areas offering panoramic views. A tropical open-air palapa bar will also provide a social hub for cocktails and drinks directly overlooking the beach.
Cabanas, Daybeds & Upgraded Facilities
To create a premium beach-club feel, new cabanas and daybeds will be available for hire, with personalized service options available for different cruises. Infrastructure upgrades will include stylish changing rooms, showers, and restroom facilities to meet modern cruise standards.
New Water Sports Centre & Marine Experiences
Guests can explore clear waters and vibrant coral reefs at a new water sports center, renting snorkeling gear, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards among other options.
Year-Round La Romana Cruises On MSC Opera
The enhancements coincide with MSC launching year-round operations from La Romana beginning November 2026, positioning it as a key gateway to the Southern Caribbean. The MSC Opera will feature a new 7-night Southern Caribbean itinerary with weekly departures from La Romana.
Summary
Starting late 2026, guests on MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys from La Romana can look forward to a significantly upgraded beach experience at Catalina Island, including an open-air dining pavilion, palapa bar, and various cabanas and upgraded facilities.
