Air New Zealand Launches Economy Skynest Sleep Pods for Travelers

Air New Zealand introduces the innovative Economy Skynest sleep pods, making long-haul travel more comfortable.

Air New Zealand is set to revolutionize ultra-long-haul economy travel with the introduction of the world-first Economy Skynest sleep pods, which will be available for purchase starting May 18, 2026. These innovative pods will be first offered on the Auckland–New York (AKL–JFK) route aboard the airline’s new Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner fleet late in 2026, providing Economy and Premium Economy travelers the ability to enjoy a fully lie-flat sleep without incurring business class fares.

Economy Skynest: Lie-Flat Sleep In Economy

The Economy Skynest includes six individual lie-flat pods arranged in bunk-style between Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Each pod includes a full-length mattress, pillow, sheets, and a blanket, along with an integrated seatbelt to ensure passenger safety when the seatbelt sign is on. The design aligns with natural sleep cycles, aiming to help travelers arrive more refreshed after one of the world’s longest commercial flights.

In the initial rollout, two four-hour nap sessions will be available per flight, priced approximately AUD 495 per session, with each passenger allowed one session per sector. These sessions are scheduled outside of main meal services to maximize uninterrupted rest time, and are restricted to passengers aged 15 and over in Economy or Premium Economy.

Comfort, Tech and “Nestcessities”

Each Skynest pod is thoughtfully equipped with amenities to enhance sleep quality at cruising altitudes. Alongside the lie-flat bed and bedding, travelers will find individual USB charging ports, a personal reading light, adjustable ventilation, and a privacy curtain for a cocoon-like atmosphere. Ambient lighting is calibrated to promote relaxation, and every guest receives a complimentary “Nestcessities” kit that includes an eye mask, socks, earplugs, Aotea skincare products, and a dental kit.

The Skynest concept builds on Air New Zealand’s heritage of innovations like the Skycouch, solidifying the airline’s dedication to enhancing passenger experience in Economy. This new offering creates a mid-tier price point for travel advisors to market between standard Economy and Premium cabins, particularly attractive to clients who prioritize sleep during lengthy flights but aren’t ready to pay for a full business class ticket.

Routes, Booking and Availability

Initially, the Economy Skynest will be exclusive to select ultra-long-haul flights between New York (JFK) and Auckland, serviced by Air New Zealand’s latest Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner (V5) aircraft. Travel is expected to commence from November 2026, with Skynest sessions available for booking after securing an eligible Economy or Premium Economy ticket.

Travel partners using airnzagent.com.au will see Skynest availability during flight selection; if a service includes Skynest, it will show “Skynest available” next to the flight information. Direct customers can find more details and check eligibility on the dedicated Skynest page at Air New Zealand Website. As more Dreamliners are integrated into the fleet, the airline plans to extend Skynest access to additional ultra-long-haul routes, marking a significant swing towards sleep-focused enhancements in Economy and Premium Economy classes.
