Indian Hotels Shift Focus to Domestic Travelers Amid Gulf Flight Disruptions
As regional conflicts affect international travel routes, Indian hotels are increasingly catering to domestic tourists, highlighting a resilient shift in the hospitality sector.
Indian Hotels Shift Focus to Domestic Travelers Amid Gulf Flight Disruptions
The global hospitality landscape has entered a new period of uncertainty following the outbreak of the 2026 Iran War in February 2026. This conflict, which has caused disruptions to aviation routes, energy markets, and travel flows worldwide, has prompted airlines to suspend flights and led to cancellations.
Despite these challenges, India’s hospitality sector is showcasing resilience by focusing on domestic demand. Discussions at the Hotel Investment Conference South Asia (HICSA) 2026, held at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai, highlighted the sector’s adaptability in light of geopolitical volatility.
Leadership in a Volatile World
Opening the conference, Manav Thadani, founder of Hotelivate, discussed the need for leadership during turbulent times. His keynote session, “Leadership in a World on Fire,” derived insights from a study of over 100 industry leaders. The essential takeaway was that the current volatility is likely to be a long-term reality.
Disruption to Inbound Travel
Reports indicate a 10–12% drop in hotel bookings in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad due to the conflict. Destinations relying on international leisure travelers, such as Agra and Puducherry, have also seen a decline in tourism as travelers postpone trips amid airspace uncertainties.
Domestic Tourism Cushions the Impact
While inbound travel is affected, the Indian hospitality market is projected to grow significantly, reaching USD 31 billion by 2029. This growth is driven by a surge in domestic tourism, with over 4.1 billion trips expected annually. Rising incomes and improved connectivity are making travel more accessible for Indians.
A Shift Toward Premium Experiences
Luxury leisure, destination weddings, and wellness retreats are trending upwards, indicating a shift towards more premium offerings in hotel supply. Cities like Mumbai and Delhi continue to anchor corporate travel, while leisure destinations remain robust.
Strategic Resilience in Uncertain Times
The lessons learned from the Iran conflict emphasize the importance of resilience in hospitality strategies. As the sector becomes more adept at navigating crises, collaboration and adaptability are key to future success.
With strong domestic demand and increasing hotel supply, India’s hospitality sector is poised to emerge as a leading market in Asia.
