Challenges Faced by Travel Websites in Achieving Digital Accessibility

A report reveals significant accessibility issues on travel websites, with many failing to meet essential standards.

Travel websites are facing significant challenges in digital accessibility, according to the WebAIM Million Report 2026. The analysis of the world’s top one million websites shows that travel sites average 61.9 accessibility errors per page, surpassing the overall average of 56.1. This reflects a rise from the previous year’s 51 errors per page.

The report indicates that 95.9% of all pages do not meet basic accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2 A or AA. Travel websites particularly struggle due to their reliance on images, complex search tools, and elaborate booking processes. Common issues found include low-contrast text, missing alternative text for images, unlabelled form inputs, and empty links or buttons.

A study conducted by Nexer Digital, titled Hidden Journey, supports these findings, revealing that 79% of disabled users have trouble browsing options, while 81% face challenges in selecting services and completing transactions. Hilary Stephenson, Managing Director of Nexer Digital, commented, “Booking travel should be exciting, but for many disabled users, it becomes exhausting.”

Additionally, the report notes an increase in homepage complexity, with an average of 1,437 elements per page, representing a 22.5% rise over a year. As legislation like the European Accessibility Act comes into effect, businesses are encouraged to prioritize accessibility to enable all travelers to plan and book trips confidently and independently.
