Macao Promotes Multi-Destination Packages to Enhance Iberian Trade Interactions at MITE

The special administrative region of Macao emphasizes its role as a connector between the Chinese Mainland and Iberian countries during the 14th Macao International Travel Industry Expo.

Macao aims to strengthen its ties with nations of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as with Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries globally.

This topic was addressed on April 10 during the China-Spain-Portugal Tourism Products Presentation at the 14th Macao International Travel Industry Expo (MITE).

The sessions showcased how the autonomous region is positioning itself as an intermediary between China and Iberian nations. Support from the Portuguese Association of Travel Agencies and Tourism (APAVT) and tour operator Ávoris has been crucial in this endeavor.

In addition to these discussions, Macao actively promotes itself at significant regional events in Europe, such as the International Tourism Trade Fair of Spain (FITUR).

Target Markets in Europe

In February of this year, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) indicated that Portugal and Spain would be primary focus markets for 2026. To affirm this strategy, Macao participated in the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL) from February 25 to March 1, making a comeback after a year’s hiatus.

Macao also initiated a campaign aimed at travel agencies in Portugal, targeting cities like Braga, Coimbra, Lisbon, Porto, and Viseu.

Moreover, its presence at the 50th APAVT Congress in December last year led to Macao being named the organisation’s Preferred Destination for 2026, the fourth time it has received this honor.

Collaborative Opportunities

To enhance collaboration, Macao’s tourism authorities plan to establish strong relations with Iberian partners through five strategic touchpoints:

  • Maintaining its status as a preferred destination.
  • Launching joint promotional campaigns to attract more European travelers through marketing initiatives.
  • Participating in leading travel exhibitions like MITE, encouraging local agents to explore Iberian destinations.
  • Offering multi-destination travel packages for a diverse range of markets.
  • Fostering cultural exchanges that emphasize Macao’s blend of Portuguese and Chinese heritage.
