UK's Tourism Future Under Scrutiny by MPs

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee examines the future of UK tourism in light of recent economic contributions from the sector.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has launched an inquiry into the future of the UK’s tourism industry, including both domestic and international aspects. This investigation will evaluate how the UK presents itself globally, the impact of culture and heritage in attracting visitors, and how the country competes with other destinations. According to the Office for National Statistics, the tourism sector contributed approximately $70 billion (£58 billion) to the UK economy in 2023, with 2024 set to be the first year visitor numbers exceed pre-COVID-19 levels.

The government aims to boost overseas visitor numbers from 42.5 million in 2024 to 50 million by 2030. The inquiry will assess if existing policies can support this goal, enhance international competitiveness, and ensure long-term resilience. Additionally, it will examine proposed policy changes, such as the possible introduction of an overnight levy by local mayors, and address challenges like rising energy prices and employment costs.

Dame Caroline Dinenage, Chair of the CMS Committee, emphasized the importance of the tourism sector, stating, “The tourism industry contributes not only to the UK economy but also plays a vital role in supporting our arts, culture, and heritage.” She expressed concerns about the UK’s competitiveness compared to European rivals, particularly in light of increasing operational costs.

The inquiry will also focus on the recovery of the sector post-pandemic and the effectiveness of collaborations among the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, VisitBritain, VisitEngland, and devolved governments. The deadline for submissions is May 17.
