India Tops in Spiritual Travel Plans for 2026
According to a recent report, India is at the forefront of spiritual tourism in Asia, with a significant rise in faith-driven travel set for 2026.
India is anticipated to lead Asia in spiritually motivated travel for 2026, based on Agoda’s latest Travel Outlook Report. The digital travel company indicates that approximately 19% of Indian travelers plan trips inspired by faith, the highest rate among surveyed Asian nations. Ranking after India are Indonesia and Malaysia, with Japan and Thailand making the top five.
The report also notes a substantial increase in travel interest during major spiritual events. In 2025, Prayagraj recorded a 233% spike in accommodation searches on Agoda linked to the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings globally. Likewise, during Holi, popular destinations such as Pushkar, Vrindavan, and Mathura saw significant increases in searches, highlighting the connection between festivals and travel.
Gaurav Malik, the Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, stated, “Spiritual travel has long been part of India’s travel culture, and the findings from Agoda’s Travel Outlook Report reflect how faith continues to influence travel decisions across the country.”
The report also indicates potential for spiritual destinations to improve their online presence, making trip planning easier for international guests. Agoda’s platform provides access to over 6 million holiday properties, 130,000 flight routes, and 300,000 travel activities, streamlining bookings for travelers. As the focus on spiritual travel grows, digital tools may be pivotal in linking travelers to rich cultural experiences.
