Blenheim Palace Introduces Deaf-Led Heritage Training Initiative

Blenheim Palace collaborates with Heritage Interpreters and City Lit College to develop training for deaf tour guides in British Sign Language.

Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has launched a collaboration with Heritage Interpreters and City Lit College to establish a pioneering training program for deaf-led heritage tours in British Sign Language (BSL). This initiative aims to tackle the absence of formal training pathways for BSL tour guides in England’s heritage sector.

After the successful execution of four pilot BSL tours in 2025 and 2026, directed by John Wilson, the palace is at the forefront of promoting the authentic and inclusive sharing of the nation’s history. The program is designed to equip deaf participants with the skills necessary to conduct tours at key historical sites. Applications will be accepted starting April 2026, with classes commencing at Blenheim Palace in September 2026.

Heather Carter, the Managing Director of Visitor Attraction at Blenheim Palace, highlighted the significance of this effort, stating, “At Blenheim Palace, we are committed to making our attraction and its history as accessible as possible.” She acknowledged the need for BSL guide training and the advantages this resource could provide for other heritage sites.

John Wilson, a deaf BSL Guide and Lecturer, acknowledged the current success of deaf-led BSL tours throughout the UK, which showcase narratives of deaf history, culture, and art. He expressed optimism for enhancing deaf engagement and access in the heritage sector through this collaboration.

This partnership exemplifies Blenheim Palace’s dedication to social responsibility and leadership in cultural heritage, ensuring shared history is accessible to everyone. For further information, check out the websites of Heritage Interpreters and City Lit.
