Concerns Rise Over Tourist Mobility Amidst Fuel Price Hike and High-Speed Train Issues

The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations expresses worries regarding soaring fuel costs and disruptions in high-speed train services, coinciding with peak tourist demand.

The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (CEHAT) has voiced significant concern regarding the rising fuel prices and the problematic state of the high-speed train network, which has been impacted by the Adamuz accident and its extended disruptions. The association warns of potential direct repercussions on tourism demand, the competitiveness of destinations, and employment in the sector, especially during a high-demand period like Semana Santa.

CEHAT emphasizes that the restoration of rail services should occur with all necessary safety guarantees, yet alerts that the continuation of the current situation could lead to substantial effects on tourism activities if normal operations are not resumed within a reasonable timeframe. “The restoration of service must be done with absolute safety guarantees, as this is our top priority. However, it is undeniable that if this situation persists, it will have a significant impact on tourism at a critical time for the sector,” stated Jorge Marichal, president of CEHAT.

CEHAT also notes that this scenario emerges within an already complicated context for transportation, with escalating fuel costs directly affecting all means of transport, subsequently increasing fares and restricting travel options for consumers. This has a particularly pronounced impact on air travel, discretionary road transport, and private vehicle use, which are the primary modes of transit for many Spaniards during spring. “Connectivity is a decisive factor in travelers’ decision-making. If uncertainty in rail services is compounded by increasing costs for alternative transport, the competitiveness of our destinations will significantly diminish,” Marichal added.

Additionally, CEHAT warns about a deterioration in the perceived reliability of high-speed rail services, which have traditionally been valued for their efficiency. Delays, recurrent issues, and a lack of clear information about the complete recovery of service are undermining user confidence, which could have medium- and long-term consequences for the positioning of rail transport as the preferred option for tourism travel.

Economically, regional associations like the Andalusian Federation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (FAHAT) and the Association of Hoteliers on the Costa del Sol (AEHCOS) are already observing demand declines ranging from 15% to 30% across various segments, with potential economic losses surpassing 300 million euros in certain regions. There is also a noticeable slowdown in bookings for the short and medium term, especially in the domestic market and segments like urban tourism, short getaways, and MICE tourism. If this situation continues, it could directly affect economic activity and employment during a critical period before key campaigns such as Semana Santa and the spring season.

In light of this scenario, CEHAT calls for not only the immediate restoration and optimal conditions of service but also strengthened investment in railway infrastructure to ensure resilience and capacity to respond to incidents. “Spain cannot afford for its primary system of tourist mobility to operate under these uncertainties. It is essential to invest in the improvement, modernization, and expansion of the network to ensure a reliable service, competitive and prepared for the future. Moreover, urgent measures should be taken to help contain fuel price increases, clarifying that actions must be taken in both wholesale and retail markets. An increase in costs may lead many individuals to choose not to travel, which would adversely affect the economic activities of the destination, impacting the entire local economy, given that tourism generates significant spending in recipient areas,” concluded Marichal.
