
Spain Welcomes 7.1 Million International Passengers in February, Driven by Growth from Europe, America, and Asia
In February, Spain experienced a significant rise in international passenger arrivals, marking a 5.2% increase from the previous year with notable growth across various regions.
Spain saw a total of 7.1 million international passengers in February, marking a 5.2% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data released by Turespaña. Passenger traffic from Europe rose by 3.9%, while arrivals from America jumped by 8.4%, and Asia reported a remarkable increase of 18.5%.
Among the key source markets, almost all traditional markets observed an increase in arrivals, with the exception of Germany and the Netherlands. Noteworthy annual increases were seen from Poland and significant growth came from Ireland and the United States. Additionally, the diversification of markets highlighted the volume and growth from the United Arab Emirates, China, and Brazil this month.
Regarding the source markets, the UK contributed approximately 1.3 million passengers, accounting for 19% of total arrivals with a growth of 3.5%. The Canary Islands received the highest share of this influx, followed by the Valencia Community and Andalusia. Germany accounted for 0.8 million passengers, representing 11.8% of the total, but showed a decline of 1.7%, primarily affecting the Canary Islands and Madrid. Italy comprised 10.9% of the flow (772,296 passengers), showing a 7.4% increase benefiting particularly Madrid and Catalonia. France contributed 7.4% of the total with a rise of 1.6%, notably around Madrid and Andalusia, while the Netherlands had a share of 4.4% but faced a decline of 4.7%.
In terms of communities and airports, Madrid experienced the highest growth rate at 7.9%, while the Canary Islands registered the smallest increase at 2.1%. The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport led the way with 1.9 million passengers, up 7.9%. Sevilla Airport showed the highest annual growth rate at 11.8%. Collectively, the six main communities accounted for 97.7% of total arrivals, with increases in all except for the Balearic Islands. This pattern reinforces the significance of air connectivity for both national and international tourism during this traditionally crucial month for the sector.
