Middle East Conflict Causes Significant Disruption to UK Travel

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to a surge in flight cancellations and delays affecting UK travelers, as reported by AirHelp.

Escalating tensions across the Middle East have increasingly dominated headlines over the past two weeks, adversely affecting air travel due to widespread cancellations and delays impacting UK travelers. New findings by AirHelp have identified which major airports are most significantly impacted since the onset of the conflict, particularly in comparison with the same timeframe in 2025.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, CEO of AirHelp, stated: “The disruption caused by conflict in the Middle East is having a profound effect on UK travelers, with thousands experiencing unexpected delays and cancellations across many of the region’s busiest airports.”

“While disruptions stemming from conflict are categorized as extraordinary circumstances and do not provide travelers the right to compensation, it is critical for individuals to understand their rights. At AirHelp, we strive to make this information clearer so travelers can be fully informed about their choices.”

Between February 28 and March 8, 2026, 90% of flights arriving in the UK from the six main hubs noted in the report faced disruptions, including delays and cancellations. In stark contrast, only 8% were disrupted during the same time in 2025, marking an 82% increase in disruptions in 2026. The percentage of canceled flights alone surged from 1% to 71%.

Disruption % of Key Middle Eastern Airports (28/02 - 08/03, 2025 vs. 2026)

Rank Airport Flight Disruption % (2025) Flight Disruption % (2026)
1 Bahrain International Airport 6% 94%
2 Muscat International Airport 0% 90%
3 Doha Hamad International Airport 2% 92%
4 Dubai International Airport 12% 91%
5 Queen Alia International Airport 14% 83%
6 King Khalid International Airport 6% 80%

The report highlights that these Middle Eastern airports are vital travel points for UK passengers, amplifying the issues of disruption.

For flights departing from the UK to these prominent hubs, travel conditions were equally arduous. In 2025, only 25% of the flights were disrupted, whereas the figure escalated to 90% in 2026.

The disruption challenges were felt across numerous key UK airports and regions, with an average increase of 67% at the highlighted six airports:

Disruption % of Key UK Airports to Middle Eastern Destinations (28/02 - 08/03, 2025 vs. 2026)

Rank Airport Flight Disruption % (2025) Flight Disruption % (2026)
1 London Heathrow Airport 24% 89%
2 Manchester International Airport 27% 90%
3 London Gatwick Airport 36% 94%
4 Birmingham International Airport 24% 96%
5 London Stansted Airport 15% 91%
6 Edinburgh Airport 26% 96%

While disruptions caused by conflicts do not provide entitlements to compensation under EC 261 and UK 261 passenger rights regulations, airlines are still obliged to ensure care and support for travelers affected. AirHelp continues to analyze real-time and historical flight data to identify disruptions and deliver timely information to passengers.
