Aena Airports Close February 2026 With Record Passenger Numbers and Moderate Growth
Spain's Aena airports report an increase in passenger numbers despite some service disruptions.
The airports managed by the Aena Group concluded February 2026 with positive outcomes compared to the same month last year. In Spain, the Aena network welcomed 20,555,745 passengers, a 2.8% increase from February 2025. However, this figure falls short of the 4% growth recorded between February 2025 and February 2024, a leap year. Of the total passengers, 0.5% accounts for an increase in routes that were resumed after the railway accident on January 18, leading to more traffic from Madrid-Barajas to Málaga and Seville and among Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat, attributed to technical incidents affecting the high-speed line.
In operational metrics, the Spanish network managed 175,332 aircraft movements in February, down 1.9% from February 2025; the interannual growth from 2025 to 2024 was a higher 6.9%. In terms of cargo, 108,238 tonnes were transported, reflecting a 9.1% increase compared to February 2025. Among airports with the most passenger traffic, Madrid-Barajas topped the list with 5,077,072 passengers (+5.3%), followed by Barcelona-El Prat (3,895,934, +3.8%), Málaga-Costa del Sol (1,575,859, +3.5%), and others.
The month of February also set records in the network, with Madrid-Barajas and 18 airports achieving their best monthly results; this includes Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Sur, and Alicante-Elche. Concerning cargo, Madrid-Barajas recorded the highest volume with 65,279 tonnes (+6.5%), marking its best February ever; Barcelona-El Prat, Zaragoza, and Vitoria followed suit for the largest cargo volumes.
Overall, the Aena Group concluded February 2026 with 25,434,678 passengers, a 3.7% increase over February 2025; managing 218,751 aircraft movements, a 1.9% decrease compared to the same month the previous year; and transport of 119,929 tonnes of goods, up 7.3% over February 2025. Up till February, the group recorded a total of 51,264,837 passengers, a 3.5% rise over 2025, along with 439,945 aircraft movements (-1.3%) and 235,805 tonnes of goods transported, 7.2% more than in the same period of 2025.
In the first two months of 2026, the Aena airports in Spain accounted for 40,871,452 passengers, a 2.7% increase from 2025; of which 348,763 aircraft movements were logged (-1.3%), alongside the movement of 211,731 tonnes of goods, indicating an 8.6% rise over the same period in 2025. Overall, the February data reinforces Aena’s reputation as a benchmark in tourism and connectivity in Spain, showcasing a sustained growth driven by demand recovery while also indicating signs of moderation amidst peaks from previous years.
