Survey Reveals Travelers Prefer Human Guidance Over AI for Trip Planning

A recent study showcases the preference of travelers for human-curated travel advice over AI-generated suggestions.

A recent survey by Civitatis, a global marketplace for guided tours, reveals that 60% of travelers still prefer human-curated recommendations over artificial intelligence (AI) when planning their journeys. The survey, which involved over 7,000 users, underscores concerns regarding the reliability of AI-generated travel advice, with nearly half of respondents encountering incorrect or outdated information, particularly related to opening hours, pricing, and real-time availability.

The study indicates that while AI is frequently used for initial inspiration, travelers tend to confirm details through trusted platforms prior to making final choices. Reported errors include outdated schedules, broken links, and incorrect pricing. Andrés Spitzer, CEO of Civitatis, stated, “While AI is a powerful ally for inspiration, genuine travel planning necessitates certainties that can only come from our teams’ expert judgement and the real experiences of our customers.”

Despite the growing presence of AI, more than 60% of respondents do not depend on AI tools for travel planning, opting instead to create itineraries on their own. The survey also highlights that over 65% of participants are over 46 years old and typically take between two and five trips annually, emphasizing the importance of direct planning and verified information.

In response, Civitatis has initiated a campaign named “Travel is Human” to spotlight the significance of human curation. The company also launched an upgraded mobile app that provides real-time travel information and access to millions of verified traveler reviews, with the aim of improving travel experience reliability.
