Thai Tourism Forum Urges Industry Growth Beyond Traditional Hotspots
Experts at this year’s Thai Tourism Forum (TTF) emphasized the need for Thailand’s tourism sector to expand its horizons beyond the key destinations of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Pattaya, and Phuket to foster further growth. While Thailand remains one of the top travel destinations globally, the forum highlighted that neighboring countries are enhancing their tourism offerings, raising competition.
Key issues discussed included Vietnam’s rise as a tourism contender and the necessity to target diverse source markets beyond China. A panel comprising representatives from C9 Hotelworks, Central Group Capital, and Marriott International, moderated by CEO David Johnson, shared an optimistic outlook.
Emphasis on Quality Over Volume
The discussion underscored a shift from volume-driven tourism to quality-focused tourism, promoting immersive experiences for visitors. Phoom Chirathivat, Co-head of Central Group Capital, expressed confidence in creating high-value tourism products leveraging Thailand’s cultural richness. Despite challenges including geopolitical tensions and a sluggish economy, the consensus was that the country has tremendous potential due to its loyal repeat visitors and untapped destinations that could shape its tourism narrative.
Potential Destinations
Experts like Bill Barnett pointed out that reliance on legacy destinations is insufficient. Emerging regions such as northeastern Isan and southeastern Nakhon Si Thammarat show promise with their unique cultural and natural attractions. Additionally, Gautam Bhandari from Marriott highlighted the company’s plans to develop midscale brands in Thailand to cater to evolving tourism demands, addressing the necessity for diversity in tourist experiences.
Thus, industry insiders reaffirmed the critical need for Thailand to capitalize on its diverse offerings as it endeavors to reinforce its standing in the global tourism market.
