A Surge in Staycations: More Brits Choose Local Getaways Over Abroad

Recent research reveals a growing trend for Brits to opt for staycations within the UK instead of traveling abroad, with Scotland emerging as a top choice.

Recent research indicates a significant trend among British holidaymakers, showcasing a preference for staycations over international travel.
In 2025, 52% of British respondents plan to vacation within the UK, while only 46% intend to travel abroad. This survey was conducted by Away Resorts, revealing Scotland as the most desirable UK holiday destination, followed by the South West and Wales.
More than three-quarters (76%) of those surveyed expressed that there are numerous parts of the UK they wish to explore for the first time. When considering reasons for this shift towards staycations, preferences for relaxation and family time dominated responses, with 36% citing relaxation as a primary reason.
Current travel trends include a rise in train travel, ‘cool-cations’ in colder climate areas, and solo travel, which is particularly popular among the 25-40 age group.
Carl Castledine, Founder of Away Resorts, stated:

“It’s always interesting to reflect on the nation’s holiday habits and—as a holiday park operator—it’s encouraging to see the appetite for staycations remains strong…”
