Banyan Tree Founder Ho Kwon Ping Urges Entrepreneurs to Find Their Purpose

Ho Kwon Ping shares valuable insights on the importance of purpose in entrepreneurship during the Singapore MICE Forum.

Ho Kwon Ping, the visionary behind the Banyan Tree Group, emphasizes the necessity of having a meaningful goal in entrepreneurship. Speaking at the 2025 Singapore MICE Forum, he reflects on his unique upbringing and the significant challenges he faced in his career.

A Unique Upbringing

Unlike typical success stories, Ho’s journey began with the privileges of living in multiple countries, significantly influencing his perspectives. He recalls his childhood in Hong Kong and Thailand, feeling like an outsider due to his diverse background.

“Growing up, my rather unusual upbringing influenced my life, but it’s not pivotal, it’s a long process. I was often viewed as an outsider, which made me uncomfortable, especially in Singapore. However, this has allowed me insights into being quite flexible wherever I am.”

Lessons from Adversity

Ho candidly shares his experience of spending two months in solitary confinement at 24 years old for alleged violations of Singapore’s Internal Security Act. This period forced him to confront his identity and authenticity:

“Solitary confinement provides a unique opportunity to confront oneself. You begin to realize who you really are, which became pivotal for me.”

Transition to Business

Despite his background in journalism and a distinct lack of interest in business, circumstances led Ho to take over the family business after his father’s stroke. He advises young entrepreneurs to avoid merely trading for others’ businesses:

“Being a trader limits your potential. You must build something of your own, a brand with proprietary value.”

As the Banyan Tree Group has flourished since its inception, Ho continues to make strides in the industry, advocating for authenticity and purpose in life. He concludes:

“Don’t sleepwalk through life; make an impact, have a purpose.”
