Cebu Pacific has been honored by the Philippine Textile Research Institute from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PTRI) for its commitment to promoting local weaving traditions within the travel and tourism sector.
The recognition came at the recent National Textile Convention (TelaCon) held at the Philippine International Convention Centre, where Cebu Pacific was celebrated for its Discover PH QR Flight Codes initiative.
This initiative turned traditional weaving patterns into functional QR codes for travelers to easily scan and explore the cultures behind these textiles.
The airline has also partnered with DOST-PTRI to continue supporting local weaving and develop initiatives that benefit textile communities.
Weaving technology and heritage patterns together
Cebu Pacific’s innovative approach involves showcasing distinct regional patterns from various areas such as Binakol from Ilocos Norte, Ramit from Occidental Mindoro, and Hablon from Iloilo, allowing travelers access to digital stories about these indigenous crafts.
Candice Iyog, the airline’s Chief Marketing Customer Experience Officer, stated: *“As an airline that bridges people and places, we see it as part of our mission to not only carry travelers to their destinations but also immerse them in the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. Supporting local artisans allows us to preserve their craft while encouraging deeper cultural appreciation.”
Furthermore, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jnr remarked on the significance of collaboration in sustainable practices, saying: *“We discussed our shared responsibility in moving towards sustainable systems and a circular economy. Through dedication, we can lead this transformation, reducing resource intensity and strengthening a value chain that benefits all, bridging economic and social divides.”
