BARIG Supports Germany's National Tourism Strategy

The Board of Airline Representatives in Germany endorses the government's new tourism strategy aimed at enhancing the country's tourism sector.

The Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG) has expressed support for the newly adopted National Tourism Strategy by the German Government, which aims to enhance the tourism sector in the country. Michael Hoppe, Chairman and Executive Director of BARIG, pointed out that while the strategy has the potential to strengthen Germany’s competitive stance in international tourism, high location costs remain a major hurdle.

BARIG, which represents over 100 airlines, acknowledges the strategy’s emphasis on the critical role of air transport in tourism. Hoppe also highlighted the need to expand air transport connections in Germany, in line with a decision made by the Coalition Committee in November 2025 to boost aviation.

Despite these positive developments, Hoppe cautioned that Germany’s high location costs continue to outpace those of other European countries. The Federal Government’s plan to reverse the recent increase in air traffic taxes effective from July 1, 2026, is seen as a first step, but Hoppe stressed that immediate further cost reductions are necessary to revitalize the aviation industry and promote economic growth. “There is an urgent need for further cost reductions to be implemented immediately in order to strengthen the entire industry as a driver of growth,” he stated.

BARIG remains committed to advocating for better conditions in Germany’s aviation sector, aiming to boost economic development and enhance the country’s attractiveness as a tourism destination.
