Tourism Constitutes Over 33% of Hainan’s Economic Output

Hainan's tourism sector has significantly boosted its economy, as revealed by recent statistics and plans for upcoming expansions.

Tourism has proven to be a significant contributor to the economy of Hainan, accounting for 33.4% of its GDP over the last five years.

According to findings presented at the Hainan Provincial People’s Congress, the province witnessed more than 100 million tourist visits in 2025, with 1.5 million being inbound tourists, marking a 35.2% increase from the previous year.

Visa-free entries surged by 64% year-on-year, while the count of international navigation vessels arriving and departing rose by 19.6%, and offshore duty-free sales saw an increase of 46.8%.

A Major Expansion in Tourism Infrastructure

Over the last five years, Hainan’s tourism infrastructure and offerings have rapidly expanded. The province has introduced two national-level tourist resorts and one new 5A-level scenic area.

In 2026, Hainan aims to enhance consumption related to marine, aerospace, and rainforest tourism. New strategies will be implemented to encourage tourism spending, diversify cultural and sports activities, and improve scenic spots and related services.

Authorities expect a total domestic and international tourist visit increase of approximately 8% throughout the year.
