Juneyao Air Launches New Shanghai-Tawau Route
Chinese carrier Juneyao Air has successfully launched its new route linking Shanghai and Tawau, enhancing air connectivity between China and the Malaysian province of Sabah. This new route started operations on Thursday, January 15th, flying three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with a capacity of 180 seats.
The service aims to meet the rising demand for leisure travel from China while boosting tourism and promoting cultural exchanges between both regions.
Darryl Hamzah, a representative from Tourism Malaysia, welcomed the inaugural flight in Tawau, alongside Rehan Shafiq Azizan from Malaysia Airport Berhad and Shirly Ho from the Sabah Tourism Board. Simon Ng represented Juneyao Air’s ground handler, Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd.
Stronger Ties
The launch of this scheduled service is part of broader initiatives to increase inbound travel from China, a significant market for Malaysia, while improving air connectivity to East Malaysia. Tawau serves as a vital gateway to Sabah’s east coast, offering access to popular marine tourism spots and cultural experiences, especially in Semporna and its nearby islands.
Tourism Malaysia’s Director-General, Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, emphasized that the new route strengthens ties between China and Malaysia via Sabah, providing added convenience for travelers and enhancing Sabah’s tourism growth during Visit Malaysia (VM) 2026. This move supports Malaysia’s efforts for VM2026 by improving international accessibility and expanding connectivity to key tourism hotspots in East Malaysia, fostering tourism momentum and encouraging repeat visits.
These renewed air links are crucial for showcasing Malaysia’s diverse attractions, culinary richness, vibrant festivities, and renowned hospitality, alongside boosting visitor numbers and tourism expenditure from key markets.
