National Gallery Singapore Introduces The Gallery Benches Initiative
The National Gallery Singapore has announced the launch of The Gallery Benches, a public art initiative that features ten red benches designed after the gallery’s logo. These benches will be situated in various locations throughout Singapore from January 9 to January 18, 2026.
Eugene Tan, CEO and Director of the National Gallery Singapore, remarked, “The Gallery believes that art is for anyone and everyone. These benches are a simple way of meeting people where they already are.” The benches will be positioned in diverse locales such as Clarke Quay, East Coast Park, and Orchard Road, highlighting the Gallery’s commitment to public engagement.
This project aims to document interactions around the benches through film and photography, emphasizing the Gallery’s role as a civic space that encourages the public to engage with art beyond the confines of museum walls.
Everyday Art
The initiative aspires to integrate art into daily life by encouraging community interaction with these benches in parks and neighborhoods. The goal is to demystify art and make it accessible and a part of daily life. Aun Koh, Assistant Chief Executive (Marketing and Development), emphasized the importance of visible and inclusive art in public areas.
Additionally, the benches will serve as a platform for a new fundraising initiative, enabling organizations and individuals to adopt a bench for three years. Contributions towards this initiative will support the Gallery’s mission to provide accessible art, funding exhibitions and community programs focused on arts and wellness. After the public installation period, the benches will be transferred to the Gallery on January 24, 2026.
