IndiGo Welcomes India's First Airbus A321XLR

IndiGo has introduced the Airbus A321XLR as part of its expansion strategy, marking a significant milestone for Indian aviation.

IndiGo has emerged as the first Indian airline to add the Airbus A321XLR to its fleet, a key move for its international growth strategy. The plane landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on January 7, 2026, and is set to launch non-stop services from Mumbai to Athens on January 23, followed by Delhi to Athens on January 24, with three weekly flights on each route.

The Airbus A321XLR represents the latest in narrow-body aircraft technology, offering a range of up to 8,700 km and enhanced fuel efficiency. This allows IndiGo to extend its international flight paths while keeping costs in check. The aircraft comes with a dual-class setup featuring 12 IndiGoStretch seats and 183 economy seats, all designed with RECARO seating for greater comfort.

IndiGo has placed orders for 40 A321XLR planes, expecting nine deliveries in 2026. Initially, these will operate routes to Athens, Istanbul, and Denpasar, with future expansion to new long-haul destinations across Europe and East Asia. CEO Pieter Elbers remarked, “IndiGo is honoured to be the first Indian airline to welcome the Airbus A321XLR into its fleet – an important milestone as we prepare to redefine long-haul travel for India.”

The A321XLR is equipped with cutting-edge digital inflight entertainment that can be accessed on personal devices, featuring a wide selection of movies, TV programs, and games. Complimentary meals and beverages will be provided, including options for pre-ordering non-vegetarian meals and purchasing alcoholic drinks.

This initiative not only cements IndiGo’s role in global aviation but also aids India’s ambition of becoming a worldwide aviation hub.
