Shanghai Becomes the Most Popular Travel Spot for South Koreans

China's new visa policy paves the way for a significant rise in South Korean tourist numbers in Shanghai.

Shanghai Becomes the Most Popular Travel Spot for South Koreans

China’s transit visa-free policy has positioned Shanghai as the leading destination for South Korean travelers.

According to LY.com, a travel platform in China, the number of South Korean tourists visiting Shanghai has markedly increased since mid-December 2024. The Huangpu district has notably emerged as the most preferred area among those travelers.

Significant Growth

Shanghai’s modern infrastructure and efficient transportation immensely enhance the overall travel experience. Airlines reported that flights from South Korea to Shanghai are fully booked, indicating a 115.8% year-on-year increase in travel from Busan, alongside significant upticks from Seoul and Jeju during the late December 2024 to early January 2025 period.

Local accommodations have tailored packages to accommodate South Korean tourists, aiming to reduce costs and improve satisfaction. Data from sector participants show that from December 21 to January 12, the Mehood Elegant Hotel near the Bund recorded an average occupancy of 91%, while the Shanghai Elong Hotel saw its rates exceed 98%.

A representative from the Shanghai Elong Hotel attributed this rise to the favorable visa conditions and increasing international bookings.

Favored Sights for Tourists

A representative from LY.com emphasized the cultural and historic significance of Huangpu district. Major attractions like Yuyuan Garden and the Bund continue to captivate a large number of visitors. The district also holds historical relevance for South Korean tourists, being the former base of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.

Pudong New Area is another major attraction, home to renowned sites such as Shanghai Disney Resort and the iconic Lujiazui skyline, featuring landmarks like the Shanghai Tower and Oriental Pearl Tower.

Amidst their sightseeing and shopping ventures, South Korean travelers are also exploring Shanghai’s cultural scene, enjoying trendy locales like cafes and night markets, and actively sharing their experiences on social media.
