Queenstown Airport Celebrates 76% Reduction in Emissions

The airport highlights significant progress towards sustainability with a remarkable 76% reduction in emissions, aiming for an 85% reduction by 2028.

Queenstown Airport recently unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report, showcasing a 76% reduction in emissions since 2019, with a target of 85% reduction by 2028.

The report includes a detailed Carbon Footprint Report that highlights the airport’s climate-related disclosures and sustainability efforts.

Chief Executive Shane O’Hare noted, “A lot of effort is going into supporting our community, reducing our environmental impact, and improving how we operate.”

A significant milestone was the upgrade of the terminal’s heating, cooling, and ventilation systems to fully electric, resulting in the decommissioning of the diesel boiler.

Sara Irvine, General Manager, emphasized the importance of adapting to climate changes, stating, “It is vital that we operate sustainably and build long-term resilience.”

The airport’s sustainability commitment also involves community partnerships, including restoration projects and a $50,000 fund awarded to local charities in its first year.

Additional achievements include maintaining Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4+, meeting sustainability-linked loan targets, and investing in electrification infrastructure.

Furthermore, the introduction of quieter, fuel-efficient airplanes by partner airlines and electric charging stations for equipment underscore the airport’s emission reduction efforts.

Queenstown Airport is dedicated to sustainable construction and staff wellbeing, including initiatives like the Whānau Policy, aimed at supporting employees.
