Vilnius, Lithuania, celebrated a delightful occasion on December 13, 2025, by launching a unique currency during its “Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas” event. This initiative, in partnership with the Bank of Lithuania, allowed locals and visitors to exchange their cherished childhood Christmas memories for special limited-edition notes, valid solely on that day. These notes could be spent on festive goodies at over 40 participating venues throughout the city.
The event commemorated Vilnius’s status as the European Christmas Capital of 2025, featuring a ceremonial minting led by the Governor of the Bank of Lithuania at the Money Museum. Gediminas Šimkus expressed, “This is a rare moment that is notably serious and joyful, blending the world of finance with the festive spirit of our city.”
Resembling nostalgic tokens such as pine cones, these currency notes were obtainable at various locations, including the Money Museum and the Christmas market, with exchanges for items like hot chocolate and sweets.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, a choir of over 200 voices enlivened the city, turning Vilnius into a sprawling family celebration. Eglė Girdzijauskaitė from Go Vilnius shared her hopes for this initiative to evolve into an annual tradition.
The city’s festive activities will continue through January 6, with Christmas markets and an ice rink in full swing. In the meantime, Barcelona has been designated as the European Christmas Capital for 2026, showcasing its rich traditions and sustainable celebrations.
