Sun Siyam Unveils Solar Energy Initiative in the Maldives

The Sun Siyam hospitality group introduces a significant solar energy project aimed at enhancing sustainability in the Maldives.

Sun Siyam has launched one of the Maldives’ largest solar energy initiatives, highlighting a major commitment to renewable energy. Announced on December 6, 2025, at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, this project aligns with a long-term sustainability roadmap for the group. The initiative, incorporating installations at Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli, aims to transform energy usage in the resorts while supporting the Maldives’ target of achieving 33% renewable energy by 2028.

The solar initiative emphasizes three areas: enhanced sustainability, increased energy independence, and technological advancement. With a total installed solar capacity of 4,110 kWp, the project is projected to generate over 6 million kWh of clean energy annually, saving approximately $1.29 million in diesel costs and cutting down CO₂ emissions by over 4,458 tonnes. This will offset 17% of the energy consumed at Siyam World and 12% at Sun Siyam Olhuveli.

Hybrid solar systems with battery storage, designed by Hayleys Fentons Ltd of Sri Lanka, will be employed across the resorts. These systems include real-time monitoring dashboards and training programs for staff to optimize energy usage and enhance team skills. The initiative targets achieving 50% renewable energy usage by 2030 and aims to set a scalable model for future developments.

CEO Deepak Booneady remarked, “At Sun Siyam, sustainability is not merely an initiative; it is a responsibility we proudly uphold.” This solar program supports the Sun Siyam Care framework, which focuses on environmental stewardship, clean energy production, and community empowerment.
