Capella Ubud, Bali invites guests to rediscover the magic of forest light in an awakening journey this festive season. This year’s celebration extends beyond luxury and leisure; it honors the fireflies.
Guests can enjoy a three-night festive stay that includes a Firefly Forest Journey, daily dining and wellness credits, along with Capella Ubud’s unique complimentary benefits, all designed to foster wonder and connection.
The experience includes a captivating journey through the firefly forests of Taro village, where these endangered insects continue to shine thanks to Wayan Wardika, a passionate forest guardian committed to firefly conservation. Collaborating with scientists and the local community, regenerative farming practices promote a balanced ecosystem where nature and culture coexist harmoniously.
Fireflies play crucial ecological roles, such as pollinating plants and managing pests. A thriving firefly population indicates a healthy ecosystem with clean air, water, and soil. However, studies have revealed a decline in firefly numbers in many regions, including Bali, primarily due to habitat loss from deforestation and pollution.
The Taro village community, located just 30 minutes from Capella Ubud, has launched a conservation program to reinstate fireflies in their natural surroundings. Wayan Wardika leads a joint initiative between farmers and scientists, establishing a breeding lab to study firefly biology and environmental needs, tackling issues like light pollution and ecological interdependencies.
From 2023 to 2025, the initiative bred over 5,000 larvae and released 279 adult fireflies into the wild. Success is linked to the health of surrounding rice fields. Farmers are transitioning away from chemical fertilizers to regenerative methods, using organic materials for fertilization and pest control. This ambitious plan aims to turn two kilometers of rice paddies into a fully regenerative plantation while providing organically grown rice for local consumption and beyond.
“The return of the fireflies serves as a gentle reminder that the smallest wonders of nature often hold the greatest significance,” shares Christian Jaquier. “We warmly invite our guests to reconnect and celebrate while experiencing the breathtaking beauty of renewal deep within the jungle. This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and community stewardship.”
Capella Ubud will contribute part of the proceeds from this festive stay to support firefly conservation and regenerative practices in Taro village, ensuring that the fireflies illuminate Bali’s heart for generations.
