Day 5 aboard Avalon Waterways’ Avalon Envision
Day 5 on the Avalon Envision provided a more leisurely pace as guests arrived in the picturesque Rüdesheim am Rhein.
Positioned within the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge, Rüdesheim is celebrated not only for its stellar Asbach brandy but also as a leading German wine region. This town boasts an impressive array of museums, historical castles, and charming architecture evident throughout its narrow streets.
With a population of just over 10,000, Rüdesheim is entirely walkable, encouraging exploration on foot or by bike. As Gary shared his experience, “I steered away from the guide’s flag and took one of the ship’s push bikes and meandered through this beautiful little town, stopping at some of the gorgeous coffee shops along the way.”
Other guests opted for vineyard hikes to sample the famous Rüdesheimer Kafee while some indulged in the standout displays at Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. This unique attraction showcases a vast collection of mechanical musical marvels.
In the afternoon, guests returned to the Avalon Envision aboard the historic Rüdesheim Winzerexpress train for lunch and a vibrant discussion on the enchanting Rhine Gorge with the cruise director, all while preparing for their next stop: Koblenz.
Noteworthy Experiences in Rüdesheim
A visit to Rüdesheim wouldn’t be complete without tasting the local Rüdesheimer Kafee, a unique brandy-infused coffee drink created by German chef Hans Karl Adam in 1957. If coffee isn’t your pleasure, delve into the delightful baumstriezel, a local pastry that combines the richness of German cake with Eastern European flavors, served freshly baked and filled.
