Japan has reported a historic 36.87 million arrivals of foreign tourists for 2024. This impressive growth is attributed to a weaker yen and the full restoration of flight routes following the pandemic.
Tourist spending has also reached a remarkable US$50.8 billion, marking the first occurrence of such figures in Japanese history.
According to the Japan Tourism Agency, the total foreign spending amounted to 8.14 trillion yen, primarily spent on accommodation, shopping, and dining. Notably, the expenditure of Chinese visitors was the highest at 1.73 trillion yen, comprising 21.3% of the total.
In December 2024, Japan witnessed a substantial 3.49 million visitors, a 27.6% increase from the previous year, driven largely by the holiday seasons.
Recent reports state that the government aims for an ambitious target of attracting 60 million visitors annually by 2030 while addressing challenges like overtourism and a shortage of labor in the hospitality sector.
