Travel Daily Media's Journey Through Europe: Day 2

An exciting recap of Travel Daily Media's second day exploring the Rhine aboard Avalon Waterways, featuring scenic views and cultural experiences.

Travel Daily Media’s CEO, Gary Marshall, is currently on board Avalon Waterways’ vessel, the Avalon Envision, as they journey north along the Rhine river.

On the second day, Gary and other travelers made their way to Colmar, a town in Alsace, recognized for its Germanic heritage. Gary shared his thoughts on the day stating:

“It was an adventurous day that took us through three countries, including Germany and Switzerland, and that was actually all in one morning!”

The itinerary was packed, starting with an exercise session early in the morning led by Raluca, the Avalon Adventure Host, to prepare the group for a day full of discovery.

Into the Heart of Colmar

The shore excursion to Colmar, while optional, comes highly recommended. A highlight of this city is the area known as La Petite Venise (Little Venice), where beautiful buildings line the banks of the Lauch River, creating a canal-like experience reminiscent of Venice.

Situated in the Quai de la Poissonnerie (The Fishmongers’ Quarter), La Petite Venise provides a charming view that attracts many photographers and tourists alike. The district is also adjacent to the Krutenau, a historically rich area that was once bustling with market gardeners and tradesmen, as well as a picturesque spot for leisurely strolls or boat rides.

A Whimsical Alternative

For guests who chose not to explore Colmar, a trip was arranged to Germany’s Black Forest, showcasing the iconic cuckoo clocks at the House of Black Forest Clocks in Hornberg. The art of cuckoo clock making began with farmers who took up woodcarving during the long winters, producing beautiful and practical pieces that are still crafted today by new artisans.

Medieval Freiburg

In the afternoon, voyagers reached Freiburg, famous for its medieval architecture and history as one of Germany’s most independent cities. Founded in 1120 AD, Freiburg thrived due to nearby silver deposits and its strategic location along key trade routes. Visitors were free to explore the intricacies of the city or join a cycling tour led by Raluca.

As the day concluded, all returned to the Avalon Envision, indulging in Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) as the ship made its way to Strasbourg, known for its gastronomy.

Travel Daily Media’s Tips

When visiting Colmar, don’t miss the picturesque canal ride in La Petite Venise. This region is also a hub for culinary delights like chocroute garnie (braised pork and sausages with sauerkraut) and regional cheeses.

Freiburg’s Old Town, with its well-preserved buildings from the Middle Ages, is a must-see, along with a visit to the Schlossberg hill for breathtaking views. Read about Gary’s Day 1 experiences here.
