New South Wales (NSW) has solidified its role as Australia’s premier visitor economy, dominating in terms of visitor numbers, overnight stays, and overall spending during the financial year ending June 2025, as reported by Tourism Research Australia (TRA).
Key Highlights
- Total visitor expenditure hit a record high of $55.9 billion, marking a 5.7% increase year-over-year.
- International visitor spending soared by 15.1%, reaching $13.9 billion.
- The state welcomed 124.6 million visitors, surpassing Victoria by 9.7 million and Queensland by 44.8 million.
- 3.9 million international visitors came to NSW, which is up 5.4% from the prior year.
International Markets Performance
- Four international markets exceeded 2019 visitor numbers: South Korea (140%), India (111%), Philippines (132%), and Vietnam (140%).
- The average occupancy of accommodations in NSW rose to 74.6%, outpacing the national average of 71.9%.
Future Outlook
Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper remarked:
“The numbers are in, and NSW remains the number one destination for domestic and international tourists. These record results confirm the NSW Government is firmly on track to achieve its goal of $59 billion in visitor expenditure by 2026.”

- Over 1.2 million international visitors engaged in food experiences during their visit, an increase of 10.7%.
- 3.3 million participated in nature and outdoor activities, reflecting a 5.5% increase from previous years.
