Air India Implements SITA Technology to Boost Operational Efficiency

The integration of SITA's OptiClimb and eWAS tools enhances Air India's performance and sustainability efforts.

Air India Group is actively addressing efficiency challenges by adopting SITA’s advanced flight optimization tools, OptiClimb and SITA eWAS. These state-of-the-art solutions are critical for enhancing flight operations, thereby contributing significantly to the airline’s modernization strategy aimed at improving sustainability and operational performance.

The technology is currently operational within the Air India Airbus A320 fleet and the Air India Express Boeing 737 fleet, covering domestic and international routes, with plans for broader deployment across their widebody fleet. This initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 35,000 tonnes each year across the entire fleet.

Basil Kwauk, Chief Operating Officer of Air India, emphasized that these technologies will assist the airline in modernizing its operations while minimizing its carbon footprint. Sumesh Patel, President of SITA Asia-Pacific, remarked that as the aviation sector contends with increasing regulatory and environmental pressures, the integration of such predictive technologies is essential. He noted, “Air India’s deployment of SITA OptiFlight® and eWAS exemplifies how advanced digital solutions can reduce emissions, save fuel, and provide tangible operational benefits.”

The Necessary Tools

SITA OptiFlight includes intelligent tools designed to optimize key flight phases using historical data, aircraft-specific metrics, and 4D weather forecasts.

At its core is OptiClimb, which provides tailored climb-out strategies for each aircraft, enabling pilots to minimize fuel consumption during the crucial ascent phase without compromising safety. Additionally, SITA eWAS offers real-time weather data and predictive capabilities, enabling pilots to avoid turbulence, reroute effectively, and make informed decisions in flight. Together, these tools give pilots a significant data-driven advantage while aligning with the airline’s sustainability objectives.

SITA is committed to expanding its flight optimization initiatives across Indian aviation, aiding airlines in achieving operational resilience and long-term environmental sustainability.
