The global hospitality community mourns the passing of Robert H. Burns, the visionary founder of Regent International Hotels, who passed away on August 29, 2025. He transformed luxury hospitality over his impressive five-decade career, prominently influencing the industry landscape while residing in Hong Kong.

Bob, as he was affectionately known, died peacefully at 96 in Syracuse, New York, surrounded by his family, including his wife, Janice, and son, Robert III.

A Legacy of Excellence

Burns will be remembered for establishing the landmark Regent Hotel in Hong Kong, which began operations in 1980, setting new standards for service and amenities in the global hospitality sector. His vision of blending Asian hospitality with global refinement marked a pivotal change in hotel management.

Notably, he served on esteemed boards, including Wharf (Holdings) Limited and Oberoi Hotels, and made contributions to multiple educational institutions such as Cornell University and the University of Hawaii. His passion for nurturing future hoteliers illustrates his commitment to the industry.

In addition to his business acumen, Burns was known for his love of jazz, serving on the executive board of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
