Northern Mindanao Communities Embrace Role as Cultural Protectors
Community members in Northern Mindanao empower themselves through heritage preservation training programs led by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
Empowering Local Guardians of Heritage
Community members in Northern Mindanao recently trained as guardians of the Philippines’ national heritage. This initiative resulted from the successful 14th run of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP)’s Conservation Goes to the Province programme.
According to a statement released on August 25, parish secretaries, museum caretakers, pastoral councils, utility personnel, and parish representatives from the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin participated in essential workshops on preventive conservation and heritage preservation from August 18 to 22 in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.
The NHCP acknowledged its local partners, including the Jasaan Parish Restoration and Development Committee, Inc., and the Parish of the Immaculate Conception led by Rev. Fr. Elvin Bernard Simene, as well as Mayor Redentor Jardin of Jasaan and the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.
Through the Conservation Goes to the Province, the NHCP continues to empower Filipinos, proving that heritage preservation is a shared responsibility among communities close to historical treasures.
Exploring Cultural Conservation Techniques
The program’s modules included techniques for conserving paper, textiles, wood, metal, and built environments, along with disaster risk management planning. Participants engaged in hands-on training on documentation, assessment, and basic repairs of historic materials, ensuring they can apply these methods within their communities.
Furthermore, the program introduced modern approaches, such as non-destructive analytical tools for material identification, bridging local practices with advanced conservation technology.
