Siyam World Maldives Unveils Pioneering Plastic Upcycling Center in Partnership with CLEAN Maldives
A significant initiative aiming to promote sustainable practices in the Maldives, introducing a facility that upcycles plastic waste.
In a groundbreaking development for sustainability in the Maldives, Siyam World Maldives has launched the country’s first dedicated Plastic Upcycling Center in collaboration with CLEAN Maldives, a local environmental NGO. This initiative represents a significant advancement in sustainable resort operations and is sparking important discussions about responsible waste management across the country.
The upcycling center is designed to transform discarded plastic items, such as oil containers and shampoo bottles, into functional products like sunbeds and outdoor seating. This is the first operation of its kind at this scale within a resort and signals a new approach to waste management in the Maldives.
The center also accepts plastic waste from the nearby island of Kudafari, contributing to the community’s well-being. Approximately 800 kg of hard plastics is recycled each month, amounting to over 10,000 kg annually, showcasing the facility’s commitment to the circular economy. Guided tours will be available for guests and school groups to promote awareness and education about reducing plastic waste.
The inauguration ceremony included notable figures such as Abdulla Thamheed, Vice President of Sun Siyam Resorts, and Hafsath Aleem, highlighting the collaborative efforts needed to tackle environmental challenges. With this facility, Siyam World aims to inspire other resorts to adopt similar models, thereby fostering a community-centric approach to tourism in the Maldives.
This initiative supports the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
- SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Through innovative solutions and community involvement, Siyam World and CLEAN Maldives are setting a precedent for future sustainable practices in the hospitality industry.
