Surge in Chinese Tourists to Cambodia: A 48.2% Increase
A recent report highlights that 690,000 Chinese nationals represented a significant portion of the 3.71 million international tourists visiting Cambodia in the first seven months of 2025.
According to Cambodian tourism minister Huot Hak, this surge indicates a 48.2% increase from previous figures, greatly benefiting the national economy.
Hak stated, “The tourism sector has contributed significantly to socio-economic development, especially with the influx of Chinese tourists before the Covid-19 outbreak, which peaked at 2.4 million in 2019.”
Key Statistics
- In 2024, Cambodia welcomed 6.7 million international tourists, marking a 22.9% rise from 2023 and a 1.4% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
- Among them, 850,000 were Chinese visitors, a 55% increase from the previous year.
Looking ahead, Hak aims to leverage 2025 as the Cambodia-China Tourism Year to further attract Chinese tourists and boost tourism sector investments while enhancing cultural ties between the two nations.
The Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB) is enthusiastic about drawing more international visitors, especially from China, throughout the year. Their target is a 5% increase during peak seasons, escalating to 10-20% during quieter months.
CTB Chief Executive Kim Minea added, “We want tourists to enjoy Cambodia, irrespective of the season. We’ve discovered that Chinese travelers tend to prefer visiting when the country is less crowded.”
