Cruise Whitsundays Plans to Build a State-of-the-Art Reef Vessel
Cruise Whitsundays announces the construction of a new catamaran to enhance its operations in the Great Barrier Reef region.
Cruise Whitsundays has appointed Austal Australasia to build a new 36-meter catamaran. This vessel, designed by Incat Crowther, is set to join the fleet by early 2027, reinforcing the company’s status as a leading operator in the region.
Journey Beyond’s COO, Sture Myrmell, stated: “This is another step in our ongoing and significant investment in the Cruise Whitsundays fleet and facilities over the next few years. This new $15m vessel will enhance Journey Beyond’s commitment to providing memorable experiences at Cruise Whitsundays’s two pontoons in the Great Barrier Reef.”
Myrmell also mentioned that Austal won the contract after a competitive tender, citing its reputation for quality, safety, efficiency, and innovation. Paddy Gregg, CEO of Austal, expressed excitement, saying: “We are thrilled to build this new vessel for Journey Beyond, which will redefine adventure on the water.”
The vessel will accommodate 390 guests, including ten wheelchair-accessible spaces and a travel speed of 25 knots. Importantly, the design features suitable seating, food service areas, and a spacious galley.
Tim Booth, CEO of Tourism Whitsundays, commented: “The Whitsundays is known as the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, and this new vessel will enhance our image as a premier destination. Cruise Whitsundays combines luxury overnight stays with exceptional day experiences.” Each year, the company facilitates incredible experiences for approximately 700,000 visitors.
