La Résidence Phou Vao Temporarily Closes for Major Renovation

The iconic La Résidence Phou Vao hotel in Luang Prabang will undergo significant renovations, set to reopen in November 2025, enhancing its cultural identity.

Iconic Laotian heritage boutique hotel La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang will be closing its doors temporarily as it undergoes a comprehensive transformation.

Hotel officials say that the property is scheduled to reopen in November of this year. The extensive project follows HMD Asia’s acquisition of the property from Belmond in late 2024 and marks a significant step towards enhancing its cultural and historical identity while preserving its reputation as the preferred address in the unique and charming UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang.

The transformation is managed by HMD Asia, the company behind Cambodia’s Shinta Mani Hotels, under the direction of executive director Anthony Lark. The hotel’s redesign is entrusted to Sanya Souvanna Phouma, a direct descendant of the Laotian royal family, ensuring that the design and guest experience reflect traditional Lao hospitality intertwined with French arts de vivre, a blend that epitomizes the region’s elegance.

Lark stated: “La Résidence Phou Vao has long been a sanctuary of serenity and sophistication in Luang Prabang. This transformation will deepen the property’s cultural character while preserving its stature as the preferred destination for guests seeking authentic connection to this remarkable region.”

A Storied History

Originally a guesthouse for state visitors, La Résidence Phou Vao holds a rich history and is the only hotel directly overlooking the stunning temples of Luang Prabang. Perched on Phou Vao Hill—or the “Hill of Kites”—its location offers breathtaking views of the Mekong Valley and sacred mountains, with the old town and its landmarks a short distance away.

According to Sanya Souvanna Phouma: “La Résidence has always been where French elegance meets Lao heritage in a unique expression of style and soul. This renovation will enhance the property’s unique character with thoughtful design updates, locally rooted experiences, and a renewed sense of quiet luxury. Our goal is simple: to ensure La Résidence continues to offer a truly rare and enriching stay that honors its origins and timeless appeal.”

Coming Soon

Set amid three acres of lush tropical gardens, the hotel’s architecture seamlessly combines traditional Lao design with French colonial charm. Following the transformation, guests will experience interiors that meld contemporary luxury with timeless Lao elegance. Every guest suite will undergo a complete renovation, featuring newly updated bathrooms, custom furnishings, handwoven textiles, and curated artworks to honor the property’s history.

The restaurant will be reimagined as a French brasserie with a refined yet approachable menu, while a thoughtfully crafted Lao tasting menu will celebrate the rich culinary heritage of the region. A renewed cultural program led by local historians will provide deeper engagement with the spirit of Luang Prabang, all while ensuring personalized service reflects the warmth of Lao hospitality.

The hotel’s reopening in November 2025 will signify a new chapter in its legacy, reestablishing its position as the ideal base for exploring the essence of Luang Prabang in refined, authentic style.
