Shravan 2025 Marks a Significant Milestone in Uttar Pradesh's Religious Tourism
A surge in pilgrim attendance and tourism activity during the month of Shravan 2025 highlights Uttar Pradesh's prominence as a leading spiritual destination.
Unprecedented Participation and Economic Growth
The holy month of Shravan in 2025 witnessed an unprecedented surge of faith and festivities across Uttar Pradesh, shattering all previous records in religious tourism. Temples, ghats, and fairs experienced extraordinary pilgrim turnout, reinforcing the state’s position as India’s primary spiritual destination. This grand confluence of devotion also catalyzed significant boosts to local trade and economy.
From the state capital to the ancient temples of Varanasi, chants of “Har Har Mahadev” resonated through the air. Pilgrims took part in jalabhishek at the city’s iconic temples, while sacred sites in Barabanki, Bagpat, and Hapur overflowed with worshippers. At Lucknow’s Mankameshwar Temple, daily pilgrim numbers surged from an average of 5,000-6,000 to 15,000-20,000 during Shravan. The Budheshwar Temple saw footfall surpassing 20,000 every Monday and Wednesday. Barabanki’s Lodheswar Mahadev Temple welcomed nearly 1.2 million devotees, with Mondays drawing up to 300,000. Bagpat’s Shravan Mela attracted approximately 1.4 million visitors, with over 500,000 arriving in a single day.
Moreover, Varanasi’s Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham shone as the highlight of Shravan celebrations. Estimates indicated footfall increased by over 10 percent compared to the previous year, averaging 70,000-82,000 visitors daily, peaking on Mondays.
Tourism Surge in Lucknow
According to July 2025 data from the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the Shravan month saw a dramatic increase in tourism activity in Lucknow, with about 350,000 tourists checking into hotels, including nearly 5,000 foreign visitors. Traditional fairs attracted over 604,000 attendees, while cultural events and festivals recorded participation of about 49,200 and 16,700 visitors respectively.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh stated: “Shravan 2025 has established itself as a golden chapter in Uttar Pradesh’s religious, cultural, and economic narrative. The remarkable pilgrim turnout reaffirms that UP is India’s pinnacle religious tourism hub.”
Economic Impact Visible in Market Prosperity
As temples thrummed with the chants of Lord Shiva, markets also felt the uplifting impact. Budheshwar Temple’s Mahant Leelapuri Ji noted thousands visited the shrine daily during Shravan, with grand maha aartis conducted four times on Mondays and Wednesdays. Special arrangements ensured optimal conditions for devotees, and sales soared nearly fivefold in Varanasi’s Dalmandi market, with “Mahakal” themed merchandise achieving notable popularity.
To accommodate the growing numbers, extensive provisions were established including purified drinking water, clean toilets, first-aid centers, and improved pathways. The system maintained safety, traffic regulation, and crowd control.
Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meshram reinforced the success, noting, “The extraordinary crowds of Shravan 2025 showcase the effectiveness of our religious tourism strategy.” With Shravan concluded, Uttar Pradesh showcased how spiritual heritage, robust infrastructure, and strategic planning can transform a religious festival into a powerful catalyst for economic vitality.
