To mark the 65th anniversary of Welcome Break’s inaugural motorway service area, a remarkable cake, shaped like a car, has been created. This artistic masterpiece took food artist, Michelle Wibowo, approximately 150 hours over 16 days to complete and weighs 90 kg.
This unique cake design pays homage to the Austin/Morris 1100, the most favored car in 1960, and features a special icing blended to achieve the signature ‘bronze yellow’ color that was popular at that time.
The cake celebration took place at Welcome Break Newport Pagnell, a pivotal service area opened in 1960, which has since evolved to include an extensive range of services catering to modern travelers.
Gary Steele, Operations Director at Welcome Break, reflects on the changes over the past 65 years and the growth of this essential travel service. He stated:
“I wonder if the first people who stopped at Newport Pagnell way back in 1960 would have thought that in 65 years there would be electric cars, a variety of different food from across the globe at the roadside…”
To celebrate, live music and other festivities were organized for staff and visitors alike. Join Welcome Break in this celebration of longevity and service to travelers.
