Hong Kong Airlines has announced its plans to commence a direct service to Melbourne starting from December 12, 2025. The new route will run three times a week, providing travelers with greater flexibility and convenience when flying to Australia. The launch was celebrated with a signing ceremony at Melbourne Airport, attended by representatives from both Hong Kong Airlines and the Victorian Government.
Ceremony Remarks
During the ceremony, Hong Kong Airlines President, Jeff Sun, expressed that this year marked significant advancements for their Australian operations. After resuming flights to the Gold Coast in January and introducing the Sydney route in June, the addition of Melbourne consolidates their position as a leading airline offering direct connections to Australian cities.
He stated:
“This has been a year of significant progress for our Australian market strategy… this establishes Hong Kong Airlines as the second local carrier to offer direct flights to Australia’s major cities and marks 2025 as a crucial milestone in our international transformation.”
Melbourne Airport’s CEO, Lorie Argus, mentioned that the arrival of Hong Kong Airlines represents increased choices and capacity in a key international hub, highlighting the strong demand for the service due to Hong Kong being Melbourne’s fourth-largest international market.
Economic Impact
Victorian Government’s Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs, Danny Pearson, commented that the new flights signify more visitors, leading to economic growth and job creation across the state.
“More flights mean more tourists delivering a stronger economy… The additional flights will also increase air freight capacity for Victorian exporters sending their products to Asia."
