Aussies Favour Early Morning Flights

A recent survey reveals that 36% of Australians prefer flying in the early morning or at sunrise, indicating a growing trend in travel preferences.

New research by TravelInsurance.com.au shows that 36% of Australian travelers prefer to take off during the early morning or at sunrise, outpacing all other departure times. The nationwide survey, which included over 1,000 Australians, also highlighted that 18% opt for midday departures, 11% for evenings, and 10% for afternoons. Red-eye flights are chosen by only 4%. One in five respondents stated they would fly whenever it’s cheapest, regardless of timing.

Shaun McGowan, the CEO of TravelInsurance.com.au, notes that early flights are often more affordable when booked online and they allow travelers to optimize their time, especially for day-of arrivals.

“Early morning flights are the most popular because they’re often cheaper when you book online and help travellers feel like they’re maximising their time, especially if they’re getting to their destination on the same day,” he explains.

This study shows that early departures are favored for efficiency and cost management, particularly concerning the proximity of destinations such as many Asian locations, which are typically just 6 to 9 hours away. Flying early can facilitate an afternoon check-in, allowing travelers ample time to unwind before dinner.

The survey further reveals generational trends:

  • Baby Boomers tend to prioritize price, with 26% saying they will fly whenever it’s cheapest.
  • Gen X shows a strong preference for morning flights, with 39% stating as much.
  • Millennials generally prefer midday travel (20%), while Gen Z opts for evening departures (13%).
