Exploring the TWA Hotel at JFK: An AvGeek's Dream

The TWA Hotel at JFK is not just a place to stay; it's an experience filled with aviation charm and history. This review covers the highlights of a stay at this iconic hotel.

Flying often accompanies larger travels, yet sometimes flying itself is the primary purpose. Events like airshows, aviation museums, and aircraft factories fall into this category. Among these are a handful of hotels that are essential visits for AvGeeks. Previous features have spotlighted places like LAX’s H Hotel and the Excel Hotel at Tokyo Haneda. However, the most prominent of these remains the TWA Hotel at New York’s JFK International Airport.

We had written about the TWA Hotel in 2019 but had yet to spend the night. This time, we were eager to return and finally cross that off our to-do list.

Accompany us on this adventure as we uncover all the unique offerings of this converted terminal turned hotel. Discover highlights, including Eero Saarinen’s stunning architectural creation, displays celebrating TWA’s golden era, a rooftop pool with runway views, and a bar inside a restored Lockheed Constellation.

The TWA Hotel is truly the sole significant lodging within the airport, which delivers a notable convenience factor.

The heart of the hotel is Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Terminal, inaugurated in 1962, complete with a model of the entire terminal in the lobby.

While JetBlue’s newer Terminal 5 has filled the previous gate areas, the original terminal building has been preserved due to its landmark status and was reclaimed from years of abandonment by the hotel. Although the guest rooms are located in modern structures adjacent to the original terminal, the check-in counter is right where travelers would once expect to find it.

Upon stepping beyond the check-in, you find yourself in the soaring core of the terminal, featuring seating, shops, and a small bar. Here, the “sunken lounge” overlooks what was once the main ramp, now occupied by JetBlue’s terminal.

The hotel excels in honoring its historical roots, showcasing an authentic Solari split-flap display surrounded by exhibitions of TWA memorabilia that capture the essence of the 1960s.

During your stay, don’t miss the chance to explore a rich display about the history of Eero Saarinen and his design process, including some of his original drawings.

One of the standout features is the rooftop infinity pool, where guests can enjoy up-close views of the bustling airport action. Reservations are recommended during peak times, and the rooftop lounge serves food and drinks for those looking to relax.

For dining, the hotel’s Paris Cafe, linked to Jean-Georges, offers high-quality meals, although prices mirror those found at other airport venues.

The TWA Hotel adeptly serves as both a hotel and a museum. It clearly demonstrates its dedication to honoring TWA’s heritage and the terminal’s historical significance through its efforts, especially with Connie, the Lockheed Constellation, included in the guest experience.

Whether planning a stay or simply passing through, this unique destination promises to captivate aviation enthusiasts.
