Catering to the Needs of the Expanding Muslim Travel Sector

The Muslim travel market is undergoing a significant recovery, expected to reach 176 million international visitors by 2024, representing a 10% increase over pre-pandemic levels. The Halal travel industry is set to soar to 230 million arrivals and $225 billion in spending by 2028.

Projected Growth: Muslim travel is evolving rapidly, with expectations of 245 million arrivals by 2030 and spending anticipated to reach $235 billion. This upsurge is largely driven by a young, digitally savvy generation whose aspirations must be understood and addressed.

The Mastercard-Crescent Rating’s report on ‘The Halal Travel Trends 2025’ was initiated at the PATA Annual Summit 2025, highlighting several emerging trends crucial for attracting Muslim travelers.

Key Trends:

  1. Rise of Women Travelers: More Muslim women are traveling, often with multi-generational families, leading to increased demand for women-friendly amenities and services in travel destinations.
  2. Sports Tourism: As more people travel for sports, destinations should ensure inclusivity for Muslim tourists, accommodating their faith-based needs during events.
  3. Solo Travel: Younger generations are increasingly seeking freedom and independence while traveling. Promoting safe neighborhoods and women-friendly accommodations can empower these travelers.
  4. Sustainable Tourism: There is a need for initiatives that restore ecosystems and empower local communities, positioning destinations as ethical leaders in tourism.
  5. Smart Apps for Halal Journeys: Technology integration enables easier travel planning and enhances the experiences of Muslim tourists, allowing them to maintain their faith practices on the go.

Fazal Bahardeen emphasizes the importance of understanding these trends from a traveler’s perspective, stating that destinations must adapt to serve this growing market effectively. The future of Muslim travel is bright, blending innovation, inclusivity, and responsible tourism to create enriching experiences.
