Lunar New Year Travel Rush Begins in China

Chinese authorities anticipate record travel numbers as the Lunar New Year approaches, prompting increased train services across the country.

China’s Lunar New Year Travel Rush

Chinese authorities report that a new record could be set for the annual Lunar New Year migration as train stations and airports reported a peak in traveler numbers over the weekend.

With the Year of the Snake slated to begin on Wednesday, 29th January, China’s transport ministry predicts that travel numbers will hit record highs over the next several days.

During the traditional 40-day period covering the time leading up to the holiday, the holiday itself, and at least a week after, approximately nine billion interprovincial passenger trips will be made by citizens using various forms of transport.

Based on forecasts, around 510 million train trips and 90 million air trips are expected during this period.

More Trains for Increased Passengers

China Railway reports that it has added thousands of trains to meet the rise in passenger numbers as of Saturday, 25th January, which is the primary peak for railroad stations. Railway officials used data from ticket lists and waiting lists to forecast passenger numbers and adjust supply accordingly. Modern technology has significantly reduced travel times and enhanced comfort for passengers compared to historical journeys, which could take up to ten days.
