Accor's Luxury Yacht Orient Express Features Innovative Water Treatment System

Accor’s newest sailing yacht is equipped with the advanced BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system, enhancing its commitment to sustainability.

Water treatment specialist BIO-UV Group has supplied its BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system to French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique for use on the Orient Express, set to be a premium sailing yacht in the Accor fleet.

The BIO-SEA system completed successful factory acceptance trials, with its installation at the St. Nazaire shipyard underway. The yacht was floated out on June 16th.

Once operational next year, this UV-based system will handle water flow rates of up to 135 m³/h. Another yacht with similar specifications is scheduled for delivery in 2027.

The World’s Largest Sailing Yacht

With a length of 220m (722ft) and a gross tonnage of 26,200gt, the Orient Express will be the largest contemporary sailing yacht and will feature the SolidSail wind sail system, designed in-house by the shipbuilder. This innovative system includes towering masts and foldable sails, optimizing energy usage and space.

Maxime Dedeurwaerder commented that this model supports the shipowner’s sustainability goals, emphasizing the compact, energy-efficient technology of the BIO-SEA system, which utilizes a single UV reactor while maintaining high performance.

Arnaud Le Joncour highlighted the importance of this technology’s compliance with international maritime regulations, crucial for Accor’s sailing fleet. The BIO-SEA B Series maintains treatment efficacy regardless of water conditions, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

For operators, the BIO-SEA systems come with a “warranty for life,” reassuring continued reliability and performance.
