Australians Set Sail for Japan and Europe with Tax Refunds
A recent survey reveals the top travel destinations for Australians using their tax refunds this year.
Overview
A new survey from TravelInsurance.com.au has unveiled the leading travel destinations that Australians are budgeting for with their forthcoming tax refunds. Far from allocating their refunds for shopping or debt clearance, over half of Australians (56%) intend to invest a portion of their FY 2025 tax return into international travel.

Shaun McGowan, the CEO, states, “Many Australians view their tax refund as a chance to afford a holiday they might have otherwise refrained from booking. Summer travel is notably appealing, especially to destinations like Japan and Europe, allowing travelers to enjoy the end of summer without the typical crowds and elevated prices.”
He adds, “Most Australians already have their flights, accommodation, and insurance in place through savings. They plan to utilize their tax returns on spending costs for tours and experiences.”
Local Travel Trends
While international travel is the primary choice, only 8% of survey respondents plan to allocate their tax refunds for domestic travel, and 6% are considering a cruise. More than a quarter (30%) of participants reported that they wouldn’t spend their FY 2025 tax return on travel whatsoever.
