China has introduced a new policy allowing Indonesian citizens to enjoy a visa-free transit of up to ten days. This decision, announced on June 12, 2025, expands the visa-free regime to a total of 55 countries.

• Indonesian travelers can enter China through 60 designated ports without needing a visa, provided they possess valid travel documents and confirmed tickets to continue their journey to a third country.
• The stay is permitted in specified areas for up to 10 days, aimed at tourism, business, family visits, or exchange-related purposes.

Significance of the Policy

An official from the administration noted that this expansion provides a vital avenue for enhancing exchanges between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members. This initiative is also designed to bolster trade and investment relations between China and Indonesia, fostering a positive trajectory in diplomatic ties.

With China being Indonesia’s largest trading partner, the momentum of collaboration is expected to grow further, particularly as bilateral trade reached US$147.8 billion last year—an increase of 6.1% compared to the previous year. Investment avenues and infrastructure projects have been thriving, with notable developments like the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor.

This new visa-free policy, alongside scholarships and youth exchange programs, aims to pave the way for Indonesia’s emerging middle class, students, and young adults to gain deeper insights into China.
