Celebrating 50 Years of the Bahamian People-to-People Initiative

The Bahamian People-to-People program commemorates its 50th anniversary, connecting tourists with locals in an immersive cultural experience.

This year, The Bahamas’ beloved People-to-People programme celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of fostering meaningful connections between visitors and Bahamian locals.
First launched in the 1970s, this initiative offers travellers a unique and immersive opportunity to experience Bahamian culture through authentic exchanges, including home-cooked meals and personal storytelling. By the end of 2024, more than 10,000 visitors have engaged in the programme, forming connections that transcend the typical tourist experience.
Over 85% of People-to-People ambassadors report developing lasting friendships with their guests, underscoring the programme’s profound emotional impact.
According to the program coordinator, Bernadette Bastian: “We remain committed to deepening the connection between travellers and our communities. This initiative not only enriches visitor experiences but also empowers Bahamians, supports sustainable tourism, and helps preserve our heritage.”
The People-to-People Programme transforms holidays into heartwarming cultural exchanges that create lifelong memories for travellers, enhancing their connection to the Bahamas. Now is a perfect time for UK holidaymakers looking for something truly special.

Visitors can register online to participate in the People-to-People programme. Once signed up, a representative will contact guests to pair them with a local host. It is advised to register at least two weeks in advance; however, last-minute requests can usually be accommodated.
The programme is accessible across nine islands, including Nassau, Exuma, and Eleuthera. It’s entirely free, thanks to support from over 800 certified ambassadors and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.
