Tourism Australia to Unveil Indigenous-Centered Travel Guide for Visitors

Tourism Australia, in partnership with Discover Aboriginal Experiences, is set to launch a unique Indigenous place-based travel guide that showcases Australia's rich cultural heritage.

Tourism Australia, in collaboration with Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE), is introducing an innovative Indigenous place-based travel guide for visitors. This guide is the first of its kind, crafted alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The guide provides a fresh perspective on Australia through the lens of the world’s oldest living cultures. It features experiences offered by over 200 Indigenous-led tourism initiatives across the country, showcasing the essence of Aboriginal heritage.

According to Nicole Mitchell, Executive Officer at DAE, “This new guide encourages visitors to Australia to learn about the nation’s shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation, particularly regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

The guide also includes a look into eleven key destinations in Australia, such as Sydney/Warrane, Melbourne/Narrm, Hobart/nipaluna, and Daintree Rainforest/Kaba Kada in Queensland. It intertwines 60,000 years of cultural knowledge with contemporary travel experiences, including city walking tours, ancient rock art site visits, and culinary delights.

In a notable feature for Cairns in Far North Queensland, visitors will learn local phrases such as “G’Day” in the traditional Indigenous language.

With rising global interest in Indigenous-led travel, this guide meets the burgeoning demand for immersive experiences connecting travelers to the land, culture, and community.
